Expected developmental milestones.

  • Balance improves: child can stand on one foot for 6-10 seconds
  • Walks on tiptoes with arms moving loosely at either side
  • Able to ascend a climbing frame with confidence, placing one foot on each rung
  • Performs running and jumping activities with arms held alongside body
  • Can pedal a tricycle and change direction appropriately
  • Uses language in conjunction with increased activity when excited.

Parents should be concerned if their child

  • Is unable to balance on feet separately
  • Walks on tiptoes with poor balance and hands showing associated mirror movements (arms move outwards and hands bend backwards from the inside)
  • Dislikes climbing activities and/or is anxious about heights
  • Runs in an unco-ordinated manner with arms above waist level
  • Exhibits high levels of motor activity
  • Continues to have difficulty co-ordinating handles and pedals
  • Engages in repetitive behaviour such as hand clapping or vigorous rubbing of thumb against forefingers of both hands when excited
