What are 'gross motor skills'?

Gross motor skills are those that relate to the movement of the child - e.g.  the ability to co-ordinate walking and the movement of the hands.

Contents

In each of the pages below are found details of expected child development, possible areas for concern that may indicate that the child is not developing their gross motor skills appropriately and possible remediation programmes suitable for parents and other adults interacting with preschool children.

Development of Gross Motor Skills

It is not uncommon for girls to develop slightly faster than boys

Mentis-XL offer a unique child development programme aimed at children whose development is in the 3 - 5 year range. This includes older children who for one reason or another have delayed development in one or more milestones. The programme is suitable both for use in the home by parents and in educational establishments .

Dyspraxia

Children exhibiting delays in gross motor skills may be suffering from Developmental Dyspraxia. For more information see the Dyspraxia Foundation Website. A book by Dr Madeleine Portwood is available on Amazon or other specialist booksellers. This details the condition - diagnosis and possible programmes to address the symptoms.
